New footage captures the first deployment of a technology designed to detect polar bears in the High Arctic. “Bear-Dar”, developed by Polar Bears International, is an AI-powered tool that can spot a polar bear in any weather, day or night, long before they come into contact with people.
As climate change forces polar bears to spend more time on land, innovating ways to keep these remarkable predators at a safe distance from people is critical to supporting coexistence. This recent detection involved a mother and her two cubs. Once detected, staff were alerted and set off in trucks to peacefully guide the bears back to sea ice – their preferred hunting grounds.
