Fences are a necessary part of the American West, but for migrating wildlife like Pronghorn and Elk, they can be a deadly barrier. Thousands of miles of old, derelict, or poorly designed fences create a maze that can trap, injure, and kill animals on their ancient migration routes.
But in Wyoming, a unique partnership between scientists and on-the-ground volunteers is tackling this problem head-on. By combining advanced GPS tracking data with a massive fence inventory project, the Absaroka Fence Initiative is strategically removing and modifying the most dangerous fences to reconnect a fragmented landscape. It's a story of how big data and hard work are coming together to save one of America's last great migrations.
