According to Prof. Peter Boettke, the greatest strength of the Institute for Humane Studies (IHS), and what sets it apart from other organizations, is that IHS encourages ongoing conversations about ideas. By convening groups of scholars and students and bringing people together to share and debate ideas, IHS gives scholar the opportunity to explore important questions and classical liberal ideas in depth. They also foster community, and mentorship. He refers to the "favor bank," where he benefitted from guidance and advice he received when he was a student, and through the IHS community and his work at GMU he can pay that forward and encourage the next generation of students and scholars.
Peter J. Boettke is a University Professor of Economics and Philosophy at George Mason University, as well as the Director of the F. A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, and BB&T Professor for the Study of Capitalism at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. He is also an IHS Distinguished Fellow for the Study of Liberalism and a Free Society.
