Scotland is a maritime nation with fascinating stories and an important seafaring history. The Solway Firth has played a part in that with bays and harbours that led to a maritime trade and fishing. It differs widely from every other firth in Scotland – or even from every other marine indentation in the world – due to the depth of the water and the extraordinary tides that almost disappear leaving miles of rich mud and un-navigable waters twice a day. But from early explorers to the building of the Mulberry Harbours, Dumfries & Galloway is rich in marine history. You can hear Professor Carol Hill telling this history and the stories of the people who left these shores and went to sea.
About the speaker: Professor Hill is Head of School and Director of the Dumfries Campus of the University of Glasgow. Her academic career began as an economic historian and her thesis covered the Maritime Economy of South West Scotland 1707–1850. She is the author of A Galloway Venture: The Kirkcudbright Shipping Company 1811–1817.
