The University of Edinburgh | Prof Michael Welker: Human Beings as God's Image? @EdinburghUniversity | Uploaded October 2019 | Updated October 2024, 3 hours ago.
Professor Michael Welker, Senior Professor at the University of Heidelberg and Director of FIIT, delivers the Gifford Lecture " Human Beings as God's Image?". It is the first lecture in the series "In God’s Image: Anthropology".
Lecture abstract: The almost religious enthusiasm that competitive sports generate through mass media finds a negative parallel when the passions of the masses are successfully manipulated by a political system such as the Third Reich. The resulting brutalization and terror call into question any references to human beings as formed in the ‘image of God’. Hannah Arendt's studies challenge us to discover powers capable of countering such processes.
