Legislation to enact the government's housing and industry policies currently face a tough road to get through the Senate.

The chair of the Productivity Commission, Danielle Wood, was an early critic of the Future Made in Australia legislation and also has a clear view of some of the issues facing the housing sector.

Last week she gave a speech in Queensland in which she reflected on how economists had lost some of their power in the political debate.
