Our old Marlin 8bit Printrboard has a big brother... the Printrboard G2. It is featured on the new Simple, but you can get it for your printer too! It is a 32 bit Arm processor with incredibly smooth motion control, controls for two fans, and even LEDs.
If you are a developer, you may have to compile your own version, but Printrbot will provide preconfigured firmware for the Printrbot Play, Simple and Plus.
