The principle of uniformitarianism allows us to connect modern processes to the characteristics of the sediments in them to the interpretation of ancient sedimentary rocks. The key concept is that similar processes produce similar deposits irrespective of when those processes occurred.
This video has 3 parts: 1) An introduction to the concept; 2) Examples of applying the principle to current and wave ripples; and 3) A discussion of how uniformitarianism can be used to understand deposits from events or on other planets, e.g. Mars.
