In this Primitive skills video my son and I hike 2 miles into the deep woods to build a primitive bush shelter. An old oak tree fell and uprooted next to a rock ledge, creating a perfect shelter complete with two natural walls. This allows for an easy A frame type shelter that takes hardly no energy to create. By using dead standing trees you can construct this shelter with no form of cutting tools. Utilizing the the tree and rock wall you also don't need to use any cordage. My son creates most of this shelter by himself and learns how to use natural brush and PawPaw leaves to create a roof for shade. We lay long straight trees down to create a bed and place ferns over them for bedding. We also use basswood and Yucca for our handrill friction fire. We don't procure any water on this outing but instead we drink from our Sawyer Mini water filter. We also catch a few crawdads.
This is an easy skill to learn and if you can find a shelter spot that is mostly created by nature it can be a great opportunity to pass down shelter building skills. Also if you are ever in a survival situation this would be a great spot to utilize.
