After losing the PWO Title under controversial circumstances a year earlier, M-Dogg was granted a title opportunity via a verbal agreement with PWO Champion Johnny Gargano. However, shortly afterward, over a dozen athletes began pursuing Gargano vehemently for title opportunities, leaving Gargano with the toughest schedule of any PWO titleholder in history, and M-Dogg lost in the shuffle. Matt refused to be ignored, and went on a months-long crusade, attacking numerous other top contenders, then framing the attacks on Gargano in an effort to ruin and damage Gargano's reputation for "avoiding" his inevitable match with Cross. M-Dogg didn't stop there, as after Gargano found out about M-Dogg's deception and sabotage, Cross attacked Gargano in a parking lot, and even went as far as to steal the PWO Title from Gargano's travel bag!
