In our review of new movie Primate, we go in expecting disaster and come out surprisingly entertained. The horror film is undeniably dumb, but it fully commits to its chaotic energy with brutal violence, impressive practical effects, and a tone that plays perfectly to a rowdy crowd. While the script and direction are inconsistent, standout work from Miguel Torres Umba and Troy Kotsur, along with a surprisingly strong score by Adrian Johnston, elevate the experience. It may not always know what it wants to be — but as a late-night, sleepover-style movie, Primate absolutely delivers.
Synopsis: Home from college, Lucy reunites with family including pet chimp Ben. Ben contracts rabies during a pool party and turns aggressive. Lucy and friends barricade in pool, devising ways to survive the vicious chimp.
