For Primal Rage's 32nd Anniversary I decided to play the DOS version of Primal Rage. This version holds a place in my heart is this was the version I played a lot of and what motivated me to play even more Primal Rage until I decided to get MAT2 on my GameCube which then kick started my whole love for Primal Rage as a whole! If it wasn't for this version I wouldn't honestly be where I am with Primal Rage.

This version does have it's problems even with my praise for it, that mainly being the collision boxes. The collisions are all sorts of messed up, especially for Vertigo, my main in the game. The collisions seem to be all sorts of wrong and cause moves which should connect to not connect at all (a great example is Vertigo's trip on crouching 3+4 has the smallest collision box on it which make it impossible to connect with the opponent). Eating humans also looks off in this version, every character has the humans fly in low and then disappear midair rather then track the characters mouth or hand. The keyboard controls can also be a pain, special ways of inputting the commands were made specifically for this version of the game when played on a keyboard using only 1+3 for all specials. The specials for some of the moves mirror the Amiga controller while others are completely original for the DOS version only. However, when played with a controller like in this video, the full Version 2.3 moves list is available to use making the version play very similarly to Version 2.3 in that regard.

Due to the collision box issues you will notice a bunch of my moves phase through the opponent, this is the biggest problem of the DOS version in full swing and is not actually my fault as when these moves phase through in this version they connect in all other versions of the game.

I played this using 86Box while running a copy of FreeDOS to play the game. I also setup 86Box to use FluidSynth, which is running on my PC as a virtual MIDI device, using the FluidR3 soundfont so the games music sounds much better then if I used the general MIDI output that DOSBOX defaults to.

Thank you for watching and RAGE ON!
