Engineering biology has the power to transform our health and environment, from developing life-saving medicines to protecting our environment and food supply and beyond.
The P3EB Engineering Biology Hub, led by the University of Portsmouth, is one of six Engineering Biology Mission Hubs launched in 2024 to drive this technology forward. They're bringing together experts across the UK to harness the power of biology against plastic pollution.
A major strand of their work is hunting down naturally occurring enzymes that organisms like bacteria and fungi are using to break down common plastics, and enhancing them so they can be used for recycling.
Engineering Biology is one of the world-changing technologies supported by UKRI's Technology Missions Fund, which is investing over £320 million in AI, Quantum Technologies, Future Telecommunications and more.
