These awful wildfires destroyed 275,000 hectares of this beautiful region over just a few days. On 15/08/2022 at 5.30pm four separate fires started, one to the south, one to the north, one to the East & one to the west. It was deliberate. Arson.
The fires, travelling at 4 kilometres per hour, generated strong winds & destroyed everything in their path. Plants, vehicles, homes, animals & livelihoods were destroyed.
Official GNR statistics show that less than 1% of wildfires in Portugal have a natural origin. At the same time, fires were raging in different parts of Europe.
I have enormous contempt for arsonists. When caught, however, they are often judged to have mental health issues.
This is a crime against the environment & affects us all.
