What a day! We recently joined Hillsborough County Conservation & Environmental Lands Management for an incredible, action-packed celebration of prescribed fire. From "sandbox" smoke to heavy machinery, we explored how land managers are Burning Today for a Greener, Safer Tomorrow.
In case you missed the festivities, here is a look back at everything that happened:
🔥 Fire Education Base Camp
We went behind the scenes at the Base Camp to see the science in action. We learned exactly how fuels, weather, and topography dictate the behavior of a burn. The highlight was definitely the Sandbox Demonstration, where we watched a bird’s-eye-view simulation of fire moving through a miniature landscape.
đźšś Heavy Equipment & Tools
It’s not every day you get to stand next to the specialized machinery used to keep Florida’s ecosystems healthy. We got up close with the heavy-duty trucks and tools that wildland firefighters use to maintain control and safety during a burn.
🧒 Jr. Wildland Firefighters
The energy was high at the kids' zone! Young explorers tested their firefighting skills through a series of interactive games. Many walked away with their very own Jr. Wildland Firefighter helmet after proving they had what it takes to protect our lands.
