Now that the lumber is delivered, I am able to get the cedar pergola lumber prepped and stained.

I started prepping the cedar posts and rolled on the stain. I used a deck brush to brush off the wood from any dust, then I was able to stain. I wanted to pre stain the posts on saw horses because I thought that would be the easiest way to control the stain. I added two coats of stain per the product recommendations and warranty.
Because it was rough cedar wood I used a roller with a 3/4" nap to really get in the wood grain. Once the sun came out it dried really quick and I was able to add a second coat within 60 minutes of the first.

Once all the stain was on and dried, I started prepping the bases of the posts. I had to use a chain saw to cut in a grove at the bottom about 5" high. I found that the chain saw was a great tool for this project.
