Die Gezeichneten (Those marked by the seal) of 1913-1915 was the fourth and most successful opera by Austrian-German composer Franz Schreker. A three-act grand opera to a libretto by the composer, Die Gezeichneten is a highly erotic, deeply pessimistic, and at least in the view of the National Socialists who later condemned it, a pathologically sick opera. It is also a profoundly beautiful work of musical art with glorious melodies, gorgeous harmonies, magnificent orchestrations, and an aesthetic unity that challenges even the best operas by Schreker's contemporary, Richard Strauss.

The Vorspiel zu einem Drama (Prelude to a Drama) is a work based on the Prelude to Die Gezeichneten that Schreker composed in 1914. The Vorspiel takes the opening of the opera's Prelude more or less as it appears in the opera, but transforms it into a sort of sonata form movement with an additional development and recapitulation. Thus the Vorspiel retains the shimmering orchestral colors, the ecstatically passionate melodies, and the sensuously erotic harmonies of the Prelude and expands them. The Vorspiel's central development, however, does not so much develop the themes of the exposition as it increases their loveliness through ever more voluptuous scoring and ever more orgasmic climaxes. Similarly, the return of the opening themes at the Vorspiel's recapitulation does not so much resolve the nonexistent conflicts of the development as it returns them to their original forms.
