Today I’m looking at Taylor Swift’s “Eldest Daughter” and how she marks the move from verse to pre-chorus. The chord progression stays the same — A minor–C–G — but the melody resets completely. Instead of entering after the chord hit (as in the verse), the pre-chorus starts right on the downbeat with “I have been afflicted…”. She leans on non-chord tones over A minor, creating that subtle 9/11 colour, and repeats the same melodic cell three times. Lyrically, the two-line unit sets up the ABAB pattern with the internal rhyme in “I’ve been dying just from trying to seem cool.”
