You are reading a praise and worship chord sheet, everything is going fine, and then a chord shows up with a 7 stuck on the end of it — Dm7, Cmaj7, G7 — and you freeze. Here is the truth: a seventh chord is not a new chord you have to learn. It is a chord you already know with ONE extra note on top.

In this clip from my full "Holy Forever" chord sheet piano lesson, I take the D minor seven that shows up in the pre-chorus and pull it apart.
A regular D minor is D-F-A. That is the Oreo cookie: letter, skip a letter, letter, skip a letter, letter. When you add a seventh, all you are doing is stacking one more layer on that same cookie — another third on top. You wanted more sweets, so you added another layer. That is the whole thing. D minor seven is D-F-A-C.
Why this matters for church pianists and worship keyboard players:
- Every seventh chord in every song works exactly the same way. Once you can do it on D minor, you can do it on C, on F, on G, on A minor. I do not care what chord it is — if there is a 7 there, you are adding one extra note.
- It is called a SEVENTH because it is seven LETTERS away from the root, not seven notes. D-E-F-G-A-B-C. Count the letters and you land on the note.
- Chords are built in thirds — root, third, fifth, seventh. Once you see that pattern, ninths and elevenths stop being scary too, because it is the same cookie getting taller.
- In praise and worship, the left hand takes the root as an octave and the right hand takes the leftovers. On a Dm7 that means D in the left, and A-C-F in the right. Now that big four-note chord fits comfortably in two hands.
