If you want to play piano for church this Sunday, you do not need fills, you do not need runs, and you do not need fancy rhythms. You need one thing: the chord, played over and over in steady quarter notes, like a clock ticking.

In this clip from my full "Holy Forever" chord sheet piano lesson, I show you the step that turns a pile of chord symbols into actual playing. Most people play a chord once and then sit there waiting for the next one. Instead, keep the chord going — one, two, three, four — and stay right with the track. That is it. Same chords you already know, same chord sheet, nothing new to read.
Here is the part nobody tells beginners: that is not a training-wheels version of worship piano. That IS worship piano for a huge number of church players.
- A lot of praise and worship players are just playing those quarter notes. They never do anything else, and they are just fine.
- The guitar is handling the rhythm. You have the drums. You have the singer. The keyboard does not need to carry the groove.
- Playing the chord more than one time is what locks you to the band. Playing it once and waiting is what makes you sound lost.
- Once quarter notes feel easy, THEN you add soft thumbs, octave hopping and licks on top. In that order. People quit because they try to jump straight to the top before the bottom is solid.
Practice this tonight: put the song on, play one chord in steady quarter notes, and change on time. Do not add anything else. When you can do that through a whole verse without hunting, you can play that song at church.
