In this clip from my full "Holy Forever" chord sheet piano lesson, I show you what I am really doing when the groove locks in: I am playing the drums on the piano. And the fastest way to learn to do that is to stop playing piano for a while.
Here is the practice trick: crank the song up, let it play in the background, and drum along on a table — or get yourself a pair of bongos. That is it. Bang out the rhythm of the song against the record.
Why it works so well for church pianists and worship keyboard players:
- It takes away having to know what chord you are on, what the next chord is, and where to put your fingers. All that is left is the rhythm.
- Most of us are so concerned with what key we are playing in that we cannot think about rhythm at the same time. That is brain overload, and it is why your playing sounds like block chords on beat one.
- Drummers and guitar players sit down at a keyboard and find rhythms easily. It is not talent — it is that they have already spent years strumming and banging on drums, so the rhythm part is free for them.
- Once the groove is in your hands away from the piano, it comes back with you when you sit down.
