Thems Fightin Herds! - 3D POM Character Rig - Created with Autodesk Maya Nutrafin 2016-02-12 | Them's Fightin Herds! - PomOverthought and detailed explanations follow....First - I'll say that I'm in no way involved with Mane6. This was done just for fun and to learn some basic modeling and rigging in Maya.Coming from working on a lot of SFM horse stuff, this seemed like something 'different' but very familiar and fun to create, rather than just moving ponies around.Second - The glaring issues and problems seen in this animated turn around.... Believe me I see them. They aren't a one click fix. This isn't a rig like SFM (technically not even a rig), thats just bones with skin on them. The IK rig running Pom took hours to build (not including skinning to the mesh) and to get working and is incredibly complicated and fragile....but compared to a REAL studio quality rig, makes this looks like SFM, honestly. It's fragile enough that if I tried to fix the existing problems I would probably create a thousand new ones in the process. I am not skilled enough to troubleshoot Maya rigging yet. That seemed more complicated at first. This was meant to really just be a demo of what I have learned to do, not an animation showcase that was made in probably 30 minutes.Third - speaking of learning to do this... Not the most beautiful thing, but also nothing to scoff at in such a short amount of time. I HAVE had experience in Maya, but only in animation. Unoriginal [Maya Practice Animation] Nutrafin 2015-06-25 | Just a random animation with audio from an 11 Second Club competition. Started this awhile ago like everything else I do. Main focus was on Mery. Just spent a couple hours today throwing in the Joe rig. Which, for some reason Maya 2016 doesnt render correctly. Works fine in 2015, BUT renderman decided to stop working in THAT version and didnt show any textures at all. I'm tired of fixing it.And in the end I decided not to even render it in renderman because I simply dont have the CPU power to render this many frames within the next century and look decent. So this is just a viewport playblast.

Not the Car! - 11 Second Club Short - October 2014 Nutrafin 2014-10-29 | More 'practice' animation. This time I'm heading back into Autodesk Maya. So there's not a whole lot of premade scenery or props to use (for free), so this scene is pretty ugly and bare, but the character rigging is 1000 times better than what you can achieve in source filmmaker.This is an entry for The Eleven Second Club for the October 2014 audio clip.As complicated as things can be in Maya, things break, and they did. A lot. I had to figure out what I should and shouldn't be doing with these characters a few times... so I ended up cutting a lot of time animating, and fixing broken rigs and textures. I kept a timer running when I was actually animating and it ended up only ~19 hours. Rendered over 2 nights.I do still have pony videos to finish, but its kind of become a joke at this point. But they still exist and I won't abandon them. They will happen someday. I thought this sort of sounded like Twilight and figured I could make a simple video of her singing. After thinking about it, I decided I want her to be in focus at all times, and always see her face when she is singing. So the entire video is one, long shot. No camera cuts, and no 'blades' in SFM itself. That last part was honestly a mistake that I'll be sure to never do again. SFM became so slow to render anything, even when hiding objects and lights disabled, it made working with the program rather infuriating. I'm using that as my excuse for not wanting to continue polishing this to look better. This should give you an idea why: http://imgur.com/VJr7dHaToo much stuff is not good. That wasn't even all of it in the end.Anyways, I got the main concept down, then I had to figure out why she was singing about memories, or who she was singing about. I Figured I'll just throw in a few random clips of her with spike at different points in time. THEN that led me to think of the 'evolving' scene or whatever you would want to call it. The background changing as the camera revolves around Twilight...I honestly didn't plan for any of it. I just made one 'set' to the next for whatever looked good enough. So I don't really know the story with the forest, or the wheat field or whatever. It just looked fancy is all.After everything is SFM was done, I had to render about 4 different times, each time with various things changed in each one. This would all come together in After Effects. (I might make a sort of short Behind the Scenes video to better show that stuff)Without going into as much detail here, I'll say that I learned a whole lot more about using AE for this one project than I ever have in the time I've had the program. Long Day [SFM] Horse shit Nutrafin 2013-09-12 | I started off by wanting to just make a pretty picture and ended up with this image: http://nutrafin.deviantart.com/art/Long-Day-SFM-399429604That wasnt enough, so I had to add some life to it.I still hate configuring the lights...I came to a happy enough balance for the video. Its one thing to set them up for a single frame, its another to have it properly work while in motion.Took about 6ish hours to set up and animate the first day. Probably took longer to find the sound effects and music that just barely fit in the next day.-----I like to point out my own "known issues" that I spot usually 3 seconds after uploading something.....:-AJ's hair is clipping her hat, couldn't be helped unless her hat was in a really awkward position. [SFM] I dont wanna know... Nutrafin 2013-08-22 | So....3D camera tracking kinda works... I blame my poor camera and low light for the jittery track where you see the characters slide around...Tracking has a hard time on blurry video. But its my first try.... Opens up some new possibilities I guess.Picking at my own work, after effects roto, shadow, color correction fails... blehAttempting to "cover up" the pillow with rarity's body didnt work like I had planned, so...yea it looks weird.Had to add some fake blur and fuzz to attempt to match the camera.And the camera track actually failed right at the end so the characters move really awkwardly off the screen. I had to improvise.I think it would work a whole lot better outdoors so the camera can catch more detail without blurring so much. Its just a pocket point and shoot.The music used had voices extracted from it and it wasnt perfect, so thats why you hear some quiet chatter....But the music fit so perfectlyTwitter! Motion blur was turned off, so the bug/glitch where the eyes dont fully close is painfully obvious._________How to do it_________These particular models in the video already have the shader mod, but you can add the same effects to any of the pony characters. Its pretty much files modifying the models .vmt files a little bit. Once you change those out, you (unfortunately) have to completely disable lighting in SFM by right clicking the view port and deselecting enable lighting. I dont know anyway around this. Maybe someone will make a proper toonshader that works like this while allowing lights at the same time.Then you must either choose outline only in ambient occlusion or completely disable it in the render settings by right clicking the view port again and selecting render settings.annnndd.. that should be pretty much it. I actually learn a bit from these small clips too..With that said, I anticipate some questions with the following answers...Update...or something.: Ive gotten a lot better using locks. Not perfect, but better, so hopefully future videos have less foot sliding.I have started using that script from SFMBox that lets you switch skins and bodygroups on the fly so there wont be any more weird hair glitchesOriginal Post_____________________________________1. The original pinkie pie cartoon face close up was used because a close up of the 3D model is NOT pretty to look at. And the cartoon face is just adorable anyways.2. I bent the Pinkie Pie model WAY out of its normal limits than what it was designed to do, so it looks broken here and there when shes moving around.3. The "Jiggle" bones (the hair) does not work well when splitting a scene...aka, fluttershy's hair bounces around awkwardly and pinkie's tail freaks the hell out at one point. I can plan around that next time. I originally did it so I could change the size of pinkies eyes, but that inadvertantly messes up other things. So I ended up taking out the section where her eyes bug in and out.4. Along the same lines as number 3, breaking the same "shot" up in source filmmaker causes many problems when trying to relocate the models on a new map. So I stayed in the dark room. You may notice a few bounces....5. Bonus points if you can somewhat recognize the "Source Filmmaker" text at the end. My level of skill in 3D animation doesn't directly transfer over to motion graphics, but meh. I'm just kinda testing it out for future videos. I want to different ones for each of the Mane 6.6. I left things out and have mistakes. I dont have a team telling me whats missing and what needs fixed. I did not CREATE ANYTHING in this video. (except the fail brush missing a texture) I merely give them movement. I used only what I could find at the time. So question: "That pony around 22 seconds texture is wrong"Answer: Its technically not "wrong", I just didnt retexture the template ponies. They came with the model pack listed in the description for the old models. They are for people to create their own characters. There are multiple instances of the template pony with different hairstyle throughout the video. All gray with blue hair. My excuse for not retexturing was just laziness. I honestly dont have a better one.Q: "Everyone lives in Sugarcube Corner?"A: Yes. Yes they do. Everyone loves cupcakes. But really, its the only ponyville themed house as detailed as that. I Looked at the ponyville map made for gmod and sfm and something about it just didnt sit right with what I wanted...Q: "Why do I see certain ponies where they shouldnt be?
