Students in Gary, Indiana, are returning to classrooms Monday to resume the 2026-27 school year, despite thousands of city residents still without power after almost two weeks in the wake of severe storms that slammed the region earlier this month. Students in Gary initially went back to school on Aug. 6, but the destructive storms that rolled through Northwest Indiana on Aug. 11, followed by more storms in subsequent days, caused hundreds of thousands of power outages throughout the region.
