Back in April I created a wildlife pond in my garden, with the intention of helping wildlife of all shapes and sizes.
One thing I did was put rotten logs around the margins of the pond, in the hope that one day they would be visited by a female Southern Hawker dragonfly. These beautiful creatures lay their eggs in rotten wood on the margins of a wildlife pond, so that the larvae can crawl out into the pond when they hatch, where they will then spend the next year developing, before turning into these magnificent insects.
Recently, my wish came true and I managed to capture a female doing just this. Words can’t describe how happy this makes me!
