I just documented how I poured wax into the channels between the ceramic tiles of the grinding tool. This avoids any stray coarse grit that may be stuck under the tiles from contaminating finer grits when grinding, which in turn avoids scratches on the surface of the mirror. Also, the wax makes the use of grit much more efficient than before because it prevents a lot of the unused grit from building up in between the channels, and ensures more of it is used for grinding the glass.
