Potty training was going GREAT… and then suddenly it stopped working? 😩
If your toddler was successfully using the potty and then started having accidents, refusing the potty, or asking for diapers again, you may be dealing with a regression.
And here’s the part many parents don’t realize:
How you respond to the regression matters.
If your toddler has a few rough days and you immediately put them back in a diaper, the message they can learn is:
👉 “Using the potty is optional.”
👉 “If I don’t want to use the potty, I can go back to diapers.”
👉 “I just have to wait this out and eventually I’ll get my diaper back.”
And that can unintentionally reinforce the very regression you’re trying to fix.
Does that mean you should force your child onto the potty or shame them for accidents? Absolutely not.
It means you stay calm, confident, and consistent with the expectation: we use the potty now. 💪
A regression does NOT mean you failed. It doesn’t mean your toddler isn’t ready. And it certainly doesn’t mean you have to start completely over.
You just need to know how to respond without accidentally reinforcing the regression.
