Whenever possible, light always comes first. And if I can, I will organize a shoot around sunlight. For my most recent video, Horse Opera, I was waking at four in the morning to film the horses at sunrise.
I made my own portraits of young people. My son and his friends directly channelling Cameron. More recently, I’ve channelled Peter Hujar’s portraits of animals. These are all forms of love, homage, re-enactment and repetition.
I’ve done re-enactments of scenes from other people’s films, and I’ve revisited my own videos, reprising images of my sisters, for instance. One time, I did it with the idea of retelling the story that showing our bodies as they are now, dramatically altered by time...
Something needs to be made when there is a strong urge. I cultivated a drive when I was quite young. It was my solution to the chaos of family life and of being roped into religion. Drive was how I planned my escape.
He felt my frozen feet and lit a fire, burning a cube of oak cut from his desk. How do you feel when you’re with your son, and your husband enters the room? And on and on. Is there anything you haven’t told me about yourself? I told as much as I could.
