So, we’re laying out the next show, which is all going to be Manscapes and Toilets. But if something happens, like a light flare, to me that’s fine. It’s not a flaw. It becomes part of the film. I sometimes laugh about ‘the fairies arrived.’ Or there’s a sense that there’s a magical moment, rather than a historical moment.
From a very early point, I felt that photos were fiction. And much of what I do is tell stories or fictions.
I was in love with this film, which is no longer made, by Polaroid, and I travelled the world with the cameras that made these images. So, the Polaroid works—the large ones, and even the 20 by 24s—I was privileged to get access to those cameras.
It was a play. It’s adults playing.
People got into it. I mean, even from the lecture, there were 33 people who wanted to take their clothes off and be a Ramboy or a Rambette.
I mean, I have the reputation of being Canada’s bad boy of photography, which was given to me many, many years ago and I delighted. So, you’ve been warned. You may not be offended by some of this work. Because the viewer is not neutral. They bring their luggage.
Every morning at breakfast, we’d talk, and she’d say, “You know, you haven’t made the photos yet. You know, you haven’t made them.” She’s the commissionaire of those works.
My mother would never get on a hobby horse and ride it with a cowboy hat. That’s not my mom. But it is my mom in the sense that she had a sense of play. Her ‘stoic-ness’ is there. There are parts of her. But again, the photograph is not reality.
