Birthday in the Austrian Alps - How We Did It
Porsche’s designer celebrated his 90th birthday in the Austrian mountains — and we built something extraordinary for the occasion. This was no ordinary project.
The mountain environment sets its own rules. Wind speeds here reach up to 100 km/h. Every decision had to be not only beautiful, but strong enough to withstand the forces of nature.
Design & Engineering
Before production began, full structural calculations were carried out — loads were analysed, and the strength of metals and fixings was carefully selected. Nothing was left to chance.
The result: geodesic domes and a tunnel pavilion, all with frames made from stainless steel. Elegant. Strong.
Modular Decking — Speed and Flexibility
The foundation is a Quick Install modular terrace system. Hexagonal floor segments connect quickly to one another, while adjustable pedestals allow the entire structure to be levelled even on uneven mountain terrain.
The terraces were anchored directly into the ground — a hole drilled, a metal anchor driven in. This ensures safety even during strong wind gusts. The pavilions aren’t going anywhere.
The Domes — Engineering Meets Aesthetics
The roofs are made from white armoured Serge Ferrari PVC canvas, while the panoramic windows use transparent PVC canvas, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
All tent components are pre-welded and ready for installation, keeping on-site assembly time to a minimum.
And one more key feature — each dome has a rooftop window at its highest point. Automatic or manual.
Why does this matter? The physics is simple: hot air rises and collects at the top of the dome. When the rooftop window opens — it escapes. We saw this firsthand during installation: with the windows closed, the heat inside was intense. The moment we opened them, the temperature dropped by several degrees immediately.
Doors & Details
The entrances to the domes are premium in every detail: stainless steel frames, toughened glass doors, Italian stainless steel locks and handles. Everything speaks a modern design language.
Because the site is exposed to wind, door closers are used to protect the glass panels from slamming and breaking.
Logistics — The Numbers Speak for Themselves
Tunnel pavilion: 16 × 8.5 m → 140 m²
6 domes (Ø5 m, 20 m² each) → 120 m²
Total floor area: 260 m²
Cargo: 15 tonnes, 18 LDM — more than one full truck trailer
Everything — domes, terraces, door frames, canvas, windows — arrived in the Austrian mountains in a single delivery.
Installation
A team of 15 installers assembled the entire structure — floors, anchors, frames, and canvas — in just 3 working days.

"When you consider the function of an object, the form usually emerges by itself," was the design credo of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, known as F. A. He had already implemented his vision of uncompromising reduction to the essentials with the legendary 911. In 1972, together with his brother Hans-Peter, he founded the design studio, which they named Porsche Design. The objects he created there quickly became classics of modern design, such as the Chronograph I wristwatch and the P'8478 sunglasses with their interchangeable lenses. F. A. Porsche would have turned 90 today on the 11th of December 2025.
