In this video, we visit the Wood Research Unit of the University of Granada (UIMA), where researchers and students are working to increase the value of local timber resources and promote sustainable timber construction in southern Spain.
For decades, much of the wood harvested in Andalusia has been used mainly for pallets, packaging, or biomass. At the same time, the region has lost most of its sawmills—Granada once had more than 40, while today only a few remain. This has weakened the local forest industry and limited the use of structural timber.
Inside the historic San Isidro Sugar Factory building, the research team studies local species, such as poplar, and explores their potential for use in modern construction. A Wood-Mizer LT40WIDE sawmill allows researchers and students to process logs, analyze wood properties, and test timber for structural applications.
By combining research, education, and practical sawmilling, the project aims to strengthen the regional timber value chain and support the future of sustainable timber construction.
