There is no doubt that in the Catholic Europe of the Middle Ages, monogamous marriage was the way to go. The medieval church held enormous power and control over the people, and this included their sex lives. Sex was something to be endured and was accepted within a marriage, joining one man to one woman, for procreation.
You married and had children or became celibate and joined the clergy. Any other sex acts such as masturbation, oral sex and homosexuality were known as sodomy and made illegal, as they could not lead to conception. As far as multiple marriages went, the rules left no place for polygamy. Or did they?
