Politics is rooted in history. Parliaments celebrate aspects of the past in particular ways – with statues, symbols, monuments and acts of commemoration. Anthropologists take different approaches to the telling of history – we're interested in memory, mythmaking, storytelling, invented traditions, and forms of memorialisation. Here we offer the stories of six political settings in six different countries that are represented as fieldsites across this exhibition. Is it possible to accurately introduce the history of a particular parliament, people or nation without getting involved in its politics? Created by Amir Massoumian.
Living Democracy runs at the SOAS Brunei Gallery until the 16th of March 2024. Find out more at soas.ac.uk/about/event/living-democracy
