Words have power. They can make people feel comfortable or awkward – welcome or isolated. One of the things which affects these feelings is the formality of the language we use. Formality is one of the most important and delicate aspects of language learning. In this lesson, I teach and discuss 10 common ways that you can make offers in English, arranging them by level of formality. What’s more casual: “Let me take your coat,” or “Allow me to take your coat”?
