Streetfilms® | Policy Idea for NYC’s Next Mayor: Commit to Repurpose Thousands of Parking Spaces Yearly @StreetfilmsCommunity | Uploaded November 2020 | Updated October 2024, 5 hours ago.
Last year we travelled to Amsterdam to bring you the news that the Green Party in Amsterdam had won election there and part of the wave that allowed them to control power was their promise to repurpose 10,000 car parking spaces from the city's streets to prioritize living, biking, greenery and quiet. We did two separate Streetfilms on it since the news was so great and incredible which has now sparked discussions on-line in other cities about doing the same.
Of course we wanted NYC to do some of the same and be equally inspired. NYC is well behind other North American cities such as Montreal and San Francisco which has had parklets as part of the mix on their streets for the better part of the last decade.
And then Covid hit us in March 2020. During the recovery, after much pressure and quite a bit of enlightenment from advocates (including some great videos on Streetfilms), the mayor and NYC DOT started to see how open streets, street dining and more bike lanes were integral to helping NYC recover.
Currently, there are now at least 10,000 parking spaces being used for non-parking uses then weren't before the tragic pandemic. And New Yorkers have embraced it. We think we should now consider this happening all over - not just on business streets but on residential areas for neighbors who want the power to alter their streets for living, for more efficient uses instead of car storage.
We have a big Mayoral race upcoming in 2021. It would be a great idea to have candidates embrace policies that set a yearly target goal to make our city more environmentally-friendly, less noisy and safer for all of its 8+ million residents! Let's do it!
