A man was arrested after jumping into El Estero Lake to avoid capture Sunday, according to police.
The call came in around 4:37 p.m. when Monterey police received a report of a suspicious person near Third Street and Camino Aguajito.
Callers said a man was climbing on top of garbage cans and appeared disoriented. One woman told police he followed her as she walked away from the area.
Police later located the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Brian Cardenas, near Pearl Street and Camino El Estero. When officers attempted to contact him, he ran away, police said.
Cardenas then allegedly jumped into El Estero Lake. Officers surrounded the lake, and he surrendered after reaching the shore.
