The MPGD Challenge stands for Max Pokédex Gym Delay Challenge. The rules are simple: Max out your Pokédex before beating the next required gym. This includes Pokémon 'seen' and Pokémon 'caught'. To get an idea of the difficulty of the challenge, imagine fighting wild Caterpies, Metapods, and Pidgeys in Viridian Forest until you level up Squirtle to evolve into Blastoise before fighting Brock.

Glitches, Trading, or any means to obtain Pokémon not directly using the Gameboy Cartridge such as Pokémon Stadium are not allowed. For the complete description of rules, click the link below:

MPGD Challenge for Pokémon Yellow - Badge 3 (Koga):
First off, why choose Koga for the third badge instead of Lt. Surge? The answer is simple: after defeating Koga, you can use Surf and can visit many new locations such as Cinnabar Island, Seafoam Islands, and the Power Plant. Combined, these locations have many new Pokémon available to catch before the 4th badge. Basically, we could have fought Lt. Surge for the 3rd badge and we'd have the same Pokémon in the Pokédex but Koga will yield more future Pokémon. Lt. Surge will be the 4th badge.

After defeating Misty and being able to use Cut, 80% of Kanto became available thanks to being able to travel through Rock Tunnel. Locations as far away as the Safari Zone became available to reach. All those incredibly rare Safari Zone Pokémon needed to be obtained, including Tauros, Kangaskhan, Tangela, Scyther, Pinsir, and Chansey. Dratini could also be caught here with the Super Rod and leveled up to level 55 for Dragonite. Additionally, the Game Corner Pokémon needed to be obtained which required at a minimum about 250,000 Pokémoney for both Porygon and Vulpix. I also had to purchase 8 Evolution Stones for stone evolution Pokémon. This meant I needed to be careful with money and sell as many TMs and other items as I could.

One cool possible Pokémon to catch is Machamp since you can trade a Cubone for Machoke in-game and then Machoke will naturally evolve. Many water Pokémon could be caught thanks to the Super Rod, but more importantly their evolutions could be caught as well, just rarer to find. Ponyta needed to reach level 40 for Rapidash and Rhyhorn needed to reach level 42 for Rhydon. Thankfully, there were many Trainers to fight for all that experience. Combined, there were nearly enough for all the Pokémon to evolve. Dragonair made it to level 44 with the remaining Trainer Battles and I grinded to level 50 before using 5 rare candies to level it up to a Dragonite. The remaining rare candies will be used for Omantye next.

Kabuto can be 'seen' at the Pokémon Zoo in Fuschia City. This is why I chose Omanyte in Mt. Moon. Raichu and Alakazam can be 'seen' by fighting and losing to Lt. Surge and Sabrina, respectively. I chose Jolteon for the Eeveelution so I could use a Thunderstone. I chose Hitmonchan because. Worth noting is Articuno can be viewed through binoculars in the building East of Fuschia City but it is not registered to the Pokédex.

All of Team Rocket can be fought without needing any new badges, so the Silph Scope, Pokéflute, and Master Ball could be obtained. Thanks to the Pokéflute, I was able to catch and get past the Snorlaxes.

In total, 105 Pokémon are possible to catch and 127 Pokémon are possible to see before obtaining the 3rd Badge!
