Avery is the rival character in The Isle of Armor in Pokémon Shield.

He battles the player over the next two trials, the former over a set of Max Mushrooms she claims discovered first, and the latter as part of a formal challenge.

Avery cheats during the third trial by summoning Psychic Terrain before the battle starts. He is eventually defeated and feels guilty about playing dirty. As punishment, Mustard asks Avery to look after the Dojo Pokémon on his own.
