Pokemon Heart & Soul (v2.0.4) is a fan-made ROM hack based on the modern decompilation of Pokemon Emerald. It was developed by a creator known as Lil Dill, and it recreates the Johto region and its storyline on the Game Boy Advance.
The game combines elements from Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal with those from the HeartGold and SoulSilver remakes, and it presents the Johto journey within the Generation 3 engine. Parts of the ROM hacking community have described it as one of the more complete Johto adaptations available for the platform.
The hack introduces numerous quality-of-life changes including but not limited to Hidden Machines being used without occupying a move slot, the Experience Share item is available from early in the game, infinite Technical Machines are provided, and certain evolution methods have been simplified and more. Quick prompts for fleeing and catching are also included.
The species roster covers every Pokemon from Generations 1 through 3 along with their later-generation evolutions, with the exception of the Regi trio and Jirachi. As in HeartGold and SoulSilver, the lead Pokemon follows the player character in the overworld. The day and night system affects both the visual palette and the set of available wild encounters.
The game reproduces the full Johto storyline and includes the Kanto postgame, and it follows the structure of HeartGold and SoulSilver. Story events such as those that involve the Kimono Girls and the character Eusine are retained. Postgame content includes 16 Gym Leader rematches, two Safari Zones, and access to the Kanto region with its altered encounter tables.
