In Pokemon Red/Blue trainer $FC gets its roster data from a rewritable location: $A5A5. This opens up a possibility of either creating your own trainer loadouts with 8F, or corrupting the address through other means to make the trainer change its roster randomly.
This allows the player to encounter item-mutating Pokemon very easily. It can also be used to prevent the ZZAZZ glitch from happening, which in turn makes the trainer's $FC glitch AI script (youtube.com/watch?v=5x9G5BWanWw) way more useful.
The battles themselves are also a very interesting challenge, as it's necessary to take down all the Pokemon in one hit - otherwise the game will crash.
