The area was the home of the Pokanoket sachem, Ousamequin, the Massasoit and peacemaker with the Mayflower Pilgrims/Separatists in the spring of 1621. The mutual protection treaty drafted at their first meeting lasted 54 years and engendered at time of peace and friendship, birthing a new nation.
