In his solo set for the Museum’s From Africa festival in February, singer-songwriter Tichaona Maredza painted a hopeful and nuanced musical picture of his homeland of Zimbabwe. Tichaona Daniel Maredza is a Zimbabwean singer, multi-instrumentalist, and composer whose music, while rooted in traditional styles of Zimbabwe, has a contemporary flair. A guitarist and drummer, Tich creates compositions with rhythmic drive, melodic intelligence, and lyrical messages of challenge and hope based on his experiences as both a musician and immigrant, while also sharing stories about his culture.
Tich has appeared at festivals across Ontario, including Afrofest, as well as accompanying visiting African stars like Zimbabwean legends Thomas Mapfumo and Oliver Mtukudzi. He leads the Tich Maredza Band, a five-piece multicultural band based in Toronto, Canada. He is also a member of the JUNO Award-nominated Okavango African Orchestra, made up of artists from different regions of Africa who are now living and performing in Canada.
