Cloycoat stares up at Almond’s silhouette, from where she’s collapsed on the ballroom floor, laying in the pool of her own blood.

The crackle of fire burning in her ears, the simultaneously cold-and-hot numb-and-agonising pain buzzing through her every nerve, it takes an effort to stay awake, and even more of an effort to discern half the words her love is saying.

There is sorrow and anger in that expression. The sorrow she’s familiar with. The anger is more recent.

Cloycoat knows she’s lost. Her mansion-palace is on fire. Debris drops from the walls and ceiling with the regularity of a heartbeat. She cannot move. She wonders what they’ll do when she’s out of the way; maybe her ungrateful brat will throw a party with that snivelling magician boy of hers.

Then her love says something that catches her attention, and she grabs onto her hold on the present for just a little longer.

Oh. They’re going to kill her.

Perhaps a little hysterically, the idea makes her crack a smile, something she knows is going to unnerve them. She makes an effort to grin wider.

What a hypocrite.

Wasn’t their whole reason for being pissed at her for causing unnecessary death? She’s already going to die. There’s no way a collapsed old crone with blood pouring out of her chest and barely any energy to stand, lying in the middle of a burning building, is going to make it out alive. She’d probably have minutes to live, anyway.

There is no need for an execution. They could easily just walk away, pretend she wasn’t there, and keep their paws clean while assuring themself of their goody-two-paws-ness.

Except.

That look. It’s a look of pure, unbridled fury.

They know it’s selfish. They know it’s pointless. They’re going to do it anyway, not because they need to, but because they want to.

Despite everything, it makes what’s left of Cloycoat’s heart race with excitement. Hatred is a good look on Almond. They look so much more attractive with it.

She stops paying as much attention after that. She lets them say what they want to say, tuning it out in favour of listening to the crackling of fire and the rumbles of debris.


There’s a flash of something metallic.

PAIN.

BURNING HOT.

Cold. Cold cold cold cold colder freezing empty nothing
