Plymouth Heating and Cooling Network is a revolutionary project that's transforming the city and paving the way for a sustainable future.
James Francis-Barrie, Senior Energy Engineer and Justin Etherington, Director from BuroHappold alongside Tom Briars-Delve, Cabinet Member for Environment & Climate Change and Jonathan Selman, Net Zero Delivery Officer from Plymouth City Council, explore the innovative scheme designed to facilitate energy exchange and discuss the benefits of the fifth generation heating and cooling grid.
Currently over 50% of energy is used for heating and cooling. Fifth generation district heating and cooling grids are an important part of that puzzle. Plymouth’s fifth generation grid has a unique opportunity to use seawater to balance the heating and cooling grid. This is a very low carbon solution, which could be relevant for other coastal cities. Crucially, the fifth generation approach is entirely replicable in locations without access to the sea and can provide the efficient and adaptable solution we need for our sustainable future.
