In the Pioneer Terra region of Pluto, clustered pits resembling gas pockmarks on Earth occur. However, their origin has been a mystery. LSU researchers compared the geomorphology of 100 pits on Pluto to gas pockmarks on Earth, finding strong evidence that the pits are sources of gas seepage from the dwarf planet’s subsurface.
