Over the past 15 or 20 years or so, we've done a lot of amp-in-a-box style pedals. The Golden Jubilee is not that, but it's kind of along those lines. Two completely different circuits in one pedal, and I'm going for the sound and feel through the input of an amp. Not clones, not recreations of anything.
The right side is the OD channel. Think JTM45, Plexi-style range. Nice crispy presence, but pleasant break up and when you dig in you get a little more dirt. One thing I can't stand about overdrive circuits is when you have a little bit of dirt and it gets muddy and muffled. We're not doing that here. The left side is a completely different circuit leaning toward the distortion character of an old Mesa Mark II-era amp. That crunch with this gnarly roundness to it, still crispy, still crunchy, but more meat in the bottom end. Not based on a Tube Screamer, not a RAT, not a Distortion Plus, not based on anything. Just op amps and diodes doing what they do.
Gain, tone, and volume on both channels. No 3-band EQ. Kept it simple on purpose. You can run either side by itself or stack them together, and when you stack them you can flip the order because one circuit into the other is a totally different sound than the reverse. Levels matter too - too loud and you push the next circuit too hard, not enough and you're not giving it enough signal to work with.
Each channel has a character switch. On the OD side it changes the clipping structure and compression, so you get a more dynamic open option versus a more hot-rodded compressed option. On the distortion side the character switch is more about how the tone control behaves through the mid frequencies, not really changing clipping at all. And it's all in a smaller enclosure so you're not burning a ton of pedalboard real estate.
In the video I'm running it into my Bravado head, which is a Fender-type clean platform, through Greenbacks. I demo both channels, the character options, flip into a Strat-style pickup sound to show how it responds differently, and stack both channels with the order switch so you can hear what this thing actually does.
