Just fiddling with a solution of silver nitrate with a higher concentration at the bottom.
The starting point was around 0.12mols of slightly impure silver nitrate and it was to be diluted to 100ml, but this separation layer and the solution not wanting to mix easily caught my interest.
Warning: silver nitrate stains skin badly.
