What happens when you stop treating aluminum foil like something that belongs in the kitchen and start treating it like a painting surface?
In this Art Lab experiment, I’m exploring aluminum foil as a textured base for acrylic painting—using all of its wrinkles, reflections, and imperfections as part of the finished piece.
I started with a black wash over the foil, then added an interference pigment to see how the shifting color would react against the dark surface and the natural shine of the aluminum. From there, I experimented with metal washers as a resist and used spray paint to create the negative space, allowing some of that beautiful metallic surface to remain part of the composition.
The result is part painting, part texture experiment, and part happy accident—which is exactly what I love about trying unconventional materials.
You don’t always need a canvas. Sometimes the most interesting surfaces are already sitting around your house.
If you try this technique, experiment with it! Change the colors, change the resist, crumple the foil differently, or find your own way to use the reflective surface.
