Jim Bagley - Retro Classics, Recent Projects and World Records

Jim Bagley has been working with video games for 30 years, from the Spectrum to iOS and he was at PLAY Expo Blackpool to talk about it all.

Jim first fell in love with video games in the arcades at New Brighton (near Liverpool) where he used to play as a child. Once he reached high school all his friend’s were playing Chuckie Egg on the BBC Micro, but Jim found the Sharp MZ80k programming book and started to analyse how the programmes worked. By 14 he had begun to code on the BBC and so after he was using BASIC to make games on the Spectrum 48k.

After school he got a job at Consult Computer Systems working on Throne of Fire with Mike Singleton, here he learnt how to push the technology to its limits.

Jim is well known for his arcade conversions and his first was converting Road Runner to the Spectrum for Canvas. He has also converted for the Amstrad with titles like Cabal, Midnight Resistance and Batman: The Caped Crusader as well as working on Doom for the Saturn.

In more recent years, Jim Bagley has hit the record books with a Gaming World Record for Largest Videogame ported to the Sinclair ZX81, Dragon’s Lair at 15,824,610 bytes.
