When you see 20-30 amateur or professional astronomers taking pictures of the same planet/comet and saying this is a potential threat to Earth, then it is confirmed by a proper sighting. Not smartphone pictures. It will first appear on the ecliptic plane of Earth in the constellation of Sagittarius. Be aware that Sagittarius is considered the south of our solar system.
