Full review of a Topdon battery tester & a Charger comeinhandynow 2022-08-02 | It is difficult to know how good a car battery is by just measuring voltage. What you need is a battery tester that measures the cranking amps, like this one. I was surprised what a nice little device it is, which seems well featured and accurate as far as I can tell. Tried on quite a few different batteries and on the car running. It also tests the car's charging system, in other words the alternator.This will probably pay for itself by being able to test second hand batteries, useful when buying a car, or buying second hand car batteres, or just knowing when your battery is nearing end of life. K-series Thermostat. Stop Overheating & Better Heater. Change PRT to output type - Old PRT reused. comeinhandynow 2022-08-01 | Better Cooling! MG Rover Freelander Thermostat. Stable head temperature! Better Heater! I show a new much better setup that avoids any potential overheating, keeps the temperature more stable and makes the cabin heater much better by changing to an output type thermostat (as used by racers) at no cost, just reconfiguring the PRT one!I discuss what failure mechanism and overheating problem I have fixed with the new setup.Second I discuss where the original thermostat is and how to change it and the rear pipe - often a source of leaks.Third how to do a conversion to a PRT type external thermostat and what it is, plus a look at the internals and how it works. Fourth - why the PRT setup can lead to engine overheating when idling, especially in cold air and why you may not know you have a problem.Fifth and finally the NEW configuration - a replumbing of the existing PRT that turns it into an engine output type of thermostat that gives MUCH more stable engine temperatures and removes the previous ‘overheat on idle’ failure mechanism. It also gives a much better cabin heater.The PRT system often appears to work ok but there is a mechanism whereby it can lead to significant engine overheating (117 Centigrade!. Which can shorten the like of the cylinder head and gasket).To see the failure mechanism you either need an additional temp gauge or an OBDII reader as the car gauge just shows normal from about 60 to 110C! (Like most modern cars! - they don’t like to worry customers!). After a long time idling it can sometimes overheat. I changed to another PRT and a similar overheat happened. Tried grey and biege PRTs. I split the old PRT apart to check operation. The pressure spring / plate is against the bypass flow pipe (engine out to pump inlet pipe). It is also pushed more as the thermostat opens (that makes sense in that it reduces the bypass flow when hot). The thermostat opening controls the cold return from the rad, the back of the thermostat with the sensing section has a limited flow from the spring/plate/ bypass flow with some mixing from the cold rad return when the thermostat opens.So the stat is trying to provide a set temperature of the return water, which is a mix of bypass and rad return water, rather than control the engine out temperature like most engine stats.Problem: At idle there is little water flow through the bypass hose as the water pressure is low and the spring /plate is closed and limits the bypass flow. The flow is restricted to 4 small holes in the plate. This small flow of hot water has to heat the thermostat which has cold water the other side of it and the PRT is a bit of distance away from the engine. Soo.. the engine could get very hot before the thermostat eventually opens. Which is what I see happening, and its made worst by the fans coming on as the engine gets hot, as this air flow just cools the PRT and bypass flow more, which doesnt help open the thermostat.Any revs quickly opens the pressure spring/plate due to higher water pressure, this increases hot water flow to the stat and it opens, rapidly cooling the engine with colder water. Not good either = big sudden temperature change.So a better system is, I believe, with a engine water outlet thermostat. This would then regulate the outlet temperature keeping it constant, reducing engine temperature fluctuations which can be bad for the HG.An alternative is to open up the 4 holes in the spring plate more, but this allows for more bypass all the time even when very hot, which is not good. I tried this with a couple of 5mm holes, but it didn’t prevent idle overheating (110C).The temp variation observed above was with a beige PRT, which is slightly higher temp than the original grey one, but the same effect was also observed on the grey one. I split apart the grey stat and it worked fine opening fully at 100C in boiling water. Hence why I changed to an output type of thermostat configuration.The car never showed any problem when used normally as this overheating problem only shows on idling for a long time. Like what happened to me while the car was having an MOT test! Or stuck in traffic for 10 mins. Not good.Due to the inherent issue of the PRT regulating the water temperature going into the engine rather than the more normal regulation of water temperature coming out, then the plan involves a replumb the PRT to make it a plain thermostat (not pressure regulated) that works on the engine water outlet. Starter Motor Noise of Gears Grinding / Overrun. How to Fix it! comeinhandynow 2022-05-16 | This starter motor noise is quite common across lots of cars. When starting there is a lingering gear grinding noise for a second after the engine starts. Easy enough to fix by removing, stripping down, cleaning and lubricating the starter motor.This work was on a Freelander1 1.8 year 2003, but is applicable not just to freelanders but to a lot of cars. With time and over say, 120,000 miles or 20 years the starters can get a bit dried up and lacking in lub slowing down the movement of the bendix gear in and out. Freezer Not Cold Enough? Do this before throwing out and replacing comeinhandynow 2022-05-16 | My frost free upright freezer was struggling to get before -5C. Here is a fix, now easily goes down to -24C. I nearly bought a new one instead. I was thinking that frost free freezers couldn’t ice up and hence never need defrosting. I was wrong. Defrosting was the fix but it needed some dismantling and a couple of days. Freelander fix for Clicking Noise on turning + IRD oil seal & Bearing change comeinhandynow 2022-05-11 | Another minor but slightly annoying ‘clicking noise on turning’ job done on my Freelander. This noise is usually caused by a worn CV joint on the driveshaft, which turned out to be the case. There was also a fair bit of play and a slight oil leak from the right hand IRD bearing so the bearing and oil seal were also changed, as shown in the video.Not an essential job but nice to have it all working 100%. As said in the video it is hard to recommend changing the IRD bearing as a DIY job as the bearing is shimmed in order to get the correct play. I took the risk and just changed the bearing for a new one as I had no easy way to keep repeatedly removing and reshimming the bearing. I took the risk and changed the bearing for a new one and it all worked out fine for me. So it depends on your risk appetite! Just changing the driveshaft is easier and was the main cause of the knocking noise I think. Torque Wrench by Handife Review and Calibration check - is it accurate? comeinhandynow 2022-05-10 | Until now I never had a 1/4” drive torque wrench for measuring small torque values like 5 Nm or 4 lbft and some bolts like on the k-series camshaft cover are around this torque setting. I’ve always just done them hand tight, but when teaching others who are just starting out on mechanics it often occurs that people over-tighten them and snap the bolts. So I was given this torque wrench by Handife to review. First thing to check is: is it accurate? In the video I show how anyone can measure their torque wrench to see if it is calibrated correctly using some scales and any old weights and a stick!The Handife torque wrench came with a calibration certificate, which is nice, showing actual tests on the unit.From my measurements it is shown that the recorded measurements are correct, verifying the 4% claimed accuracy. Does it last? comeinhandynow 2021-08-30 | Quite a few years ago I shared a discovery that Ronseal Hardwood furniture oil is great for restoring car black plastic back to looking like new black plastic again, instead of that grey colour that it goes after many years.Many people asked how long it lasts. Well finally here is the definitive answer and proof. I show the results after 3 years. Many people also said use a hot air gun. This obviously works for some people but it doesn’t work on fairly old plastic, as there is little oil left in the plastic to rise up from the action of the heat. It also risks melting the plastic! Or blistering the paint! Obviously best avoided. I tried the hot air gun method on my old Discovery (see the original bumper blackening video here: youtu.be/steNu7tjgVM ) and it didn’t work. CV Rubber Boot Change on Freelander 1 (Land Rover) comeinhandynow 2021-04-23 | How to change the CV (constant velocity) joint rubber boots on a Land Rover Freelander1. Or at least how I did mine. Mine may have been an aftermarket driveshaft as the inner rubber boot didn't seem to match the official ones but hopefully the principles involved will be the same for yours and give you the confidence to do yours yourself. On the last CV boot I did on a Rover, the outer CV joint would knock off the shaft in order to make it easy to change the boot while leaving the inner CV joint still in the gearbox. This saved having to drain and change the gearbox oil. See my other video on that if interested:youtu.be/7ahGJL0-92MThis time either because my shaft may have been an aftermarket one, or the design is different, or because it was just stuck, it wouldn't knock off so easily and for me instead the inner CV joint came apart easily allowing the shaft and half the joint to be removed when the rubber boot was cut through to release it. The sensor only costs £5 so go do it now. You could reuse your old expansion bottle by putting two electrical connection points low in the water, like a couple of bolts. Or you could put in a tank with a two wire sensing point in place, like in this video.This job is on a Land Rover Freelander 1.8 but applies to any car. It is especially important on modern aluminium engines with small coolant water capacities like on the Rover k-series and other modern engines. Jeep Merc Chrysler 3.0 CRD Warning Light? Quick Fix Resistor OM642 Swirl Bypass ETC Lightening bolt comeinhandynow 2021-01-18 | The warning light of a lightening bolt in two lines came up flashing on this Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD with the OM642 Merc engine. It is common and caused by oil getting into the swirl motor circuit. Disconnect the swirl motor and trick the ECU into thinking it is still there and working by adding one 4700 ohm resistor (4.7k or 4k7 is the terminology used). Tried on Jag, Mini, Freelander comeinhandynow 2020-11-05 | I recently bought this for doing proper brake bleeding (ABS autobleed) on a modern car, but found that it has a lot of other useful functions that are worth sharing. Not only OBDII error code reading and resets, with detailed descriptions but it can also talk to other modules like ABS / DSC, SRS / Airbag, EPB (electronic park brake), BMS (battery management) and throttle and steering systems. Previously I seemed to be buying new obd2 cables and software for each car, but this AP200 software for this device seems to cover most manufacturers and cars with five different interface protocols supported.I tried it on a Jaguar F-Pace 2016, BMW Mini R55 2007 and a Landrover Freelander 1.8 2003 year. It read and resets error codes from the main ECU and ABS and SRS(airbag) car modules, which were the features that came with the device. Fix a Dripping Tap for Zero Cost Quickly - 1/4 turn ceramic valves comeinhandynow 2020-10-23 | Got an annoying dripping tap? A 1/4 turn ceramic valve type? Here is the way to fix it easily and quickly and for zero cost, in my case. Even if you replace the whole valve it is only £8. Save time, save money and more convenient to just fix it yourself. Don’t be afraid to DIY it’s quite easy. Use this video as a guide. The tap tops in this video just pulled off. They were very stiff so I had to use two screwdrivers each side to lever it off. My tap had a regular drip, which then turned into a pour after I pushed and pulled the knob to see it I could find a position where it stopped. Taking it apart as shown in the video completely fixed it and a week later it is still good with no dripping. All at zero cost. Traction and Hill Descent Lights on? - Freelander1 - Quick Fix for “The Two Amigos” comeinhandynow 2020-10-12 | A common problem that anybody can fix quickly, caused by a worn brake switch or a blown fuse. It’s a common problem on the Freelander1, but is cheap to fix with a new switch that takes about a minute to replace. Or a change of fuse. No collection of Freelander fixing videos would be complete without this one. It’s commonly refers to as the two Amigos, i.e. two lights on. It’s often described on forums but just for completeness here is the fix video. The brake switch can be repaired as shown here. Sometimes there is a break that can be fixed by soldering (happened to me on another car) sometimes its just worn out as in this case. On this fix interestingly it was also caused by a blown fuse (F2 in drivers side inside fuse box) probably caused by a trailer attachment. Fuse hasn’t blown since being replaced. A new switch always seems to be best as even after fixing both the fuse and the brake switch the lights would just occasionally come on again. Changing the brake switch for a new one fixed it completely with no more lights.There are other possible reasons for these lights, along with “the three amigos” of HDC, TC and ABS lights on. Make your Turbo Last Longer - By keeping it Cool and Not Cook the Oil comeinhandynow 2020-10-09 | How to provide additional pumped cooling for your Turbo, like more modern cars. I have seen burnt out bearings in a Turbo that then generated loads of oily smoke. I have also heard the water boiling in the Turbo after stopping.To stop that and prevent the oil in the Turbo from cooking and coking up the bearing, some modern cars have an additional electric water pump that runs on after the car has stopped, that cools the turbo. You may have heard the advice to idle the engine for a few minutes after stopping to allow the Turbo to cool down. Well this circuit does that for you, but without having to leave the engine running. It is a run-on timer with extra water pump. Importantly the timer circuit is set up to use ZERO power after the time of 4 minutes is up, so as not to drain the battery.In this video I show how I added a cheap second hand eBay water pump, meant for this purpose, to a turbo used in a Freelander 1.8 Turbo. Freelander 1.8 Turbo Conversion 200bhp comeinhandynow 2020-09-21 | This is a story of converting a standard petrol 1.8 freelander to a 200bhp Turbo engine, using the original engine block and driveline. Why, you may ask? It’s for more driving fun and because the more powerful 185bhp 2.5V6 only comes as an auto, whereas the 1.8’s are usually manual, which again is more fun.It is a two stage story, my first build was just getting the engine and bits together that were bought (was told it was a turbo engine - it wasn’t!)A good lesson, check eBay buys more thoroughly! And adding a Turbo to a standard 1.8 engine is asking for trouble! - It didn’t last long! Also you need a properly mapped ECU (changed to a KMaps 200bhp MEMS3 ECU later from the rather unusual XIC ECU on the initial build)So the second chapter (from 7m 49s) is all about doing it properly, so you can skip to that if you prefer. MG Rover K-Series Engine Rebuild Dos & Donts. Extra Hints & Tips comeinhandynow 2020-08-25 | During a recent K-series 1.8 rebuild of a poorly built engine, a list of Do's and Don'ts on engine rebuilds came to mind that I am sharing here. Let me say this is my personal perspective from analysis of this engine and experience from rebuilding others over the years. I am sure there are other more qualified experts on this engine out there, so by all means contribute and discuss in the comments but keep differences of opinion civil! Engine balancing is a larger subject that I didn't really discuss much as there are better videos out there, so please look up those and my balancing was a bit crude but still some improvement over standard.For full rebuild details of course use a Rover / Haynes workshop manual. This video is just some extra points to check. For instance a lot of people have there own preference for head gasket, my preference is the MG6 and KV6 type of MLS gasket without aggressive fire rings. Don’t Over-skim the Cylinder head. Min height 118.75mm according to OEM. Time 0:45 in video2. Don’t use silicon, definitely not lots of it, on the Camshaft retaining ladder. Time 2:08 in video3. Don’t over-tune it like adding a turbo without changing anything else! This engine had a melted piston! Time 4:284. Don’t ignore bad indents on the head, skim or replace. Time 6:585. Don’t ignore scatches or corrosion on the surface of the block. Time 8:02Do’s;1. Do use the N-series head gasket. My personal favourite. Time 8:26 (Also I should add use the 10.9 high tensile strength head bolts) 2. Use the PRT thermostat. Time 9:063. Use the stronger Oil Rail 9:264. Check piston/conrod balance between rods/pistons 9:355. Set the piston ring gaps (especially if doing a turbo conversion) 10:416. Locate the piston ring ends correctly on assembling. Time 11:377. Check Liners are even and protrude over the block 3 to 4 thou. Time 12:12. Also see fitting shim later at time 19:168. Align pistons correctly, arrow to front. Time 12:289. Clean out the hydraulic Tappets / Lifters. Time 12:5510. Use liner clamps to stop liners moving on engine rotation. Time 13:2311. Use steel head dowels and check depth/ height. Time 14:1812. If using a ‘manual tensioner’ type cylinder head to replace an automatic tensioner style one take care to block unused holes. Time 15:1913. If looking to buy a new head, check head height. Time 17:1914. Grind out any water way flashing. Time 18:0815. Fit liner shims if liners sunk or flat with block. Time Time 19:1416. Seal the liners (and shims). I used Hylomar in the end Time 20:3617. Check the oil rings don’t flip out and get bent while fitting. Time 21:4318. Check for rusted pipes and leaks - e.g. water pump inlet pipe. Time 22:4719. Check / replace if necessary the expansion tank. Time 23:1820. Plug the rear (gearbox side) water hole in inlet manifold (a minor leak improvement). Time 25:1221. Check for cracks in belts. Changing Car Tyres (Tires) DIY - Is it worth the Bother? - Pros, Cons & Balancing comeinhandynow 2020-06-20 | Is it worth the effort and time of changing your own car tyres (tires)? Well yes it can be but weigh up the pros and cons as in the video. There are definitely things that you can do better yourself like sealing against leaks on corroded edges, as you have more time. And eventually you will save some money after a few tyres changes. In this video I go through the whole tyre changing process, removing, cleaning up, assembling and balancing the tyre.There were more advantages than disadvantages but it does take a fair bit of effort and time with these manual tyre changers. Waxoyling the underneath where rust shows or is starting, fixing mud traps and where rust on the sill starts, removing rust from brake drums and discs and protecting brake pipes is shown in this video.It’s best to remove the wheel arch liners front and back and remove the rear wheel arch (front part of it) for best access. How to Fix the iPad Pro keyboard - 4 fixes! Working Proof! comeinhandynow 2020-04-08 | The iPad pro smart keyboard is great until it stops working or intermittently connects, giving “accessory not supported” messages. In this video I show what’s is causing this and how to fix it. Conductive tracks inside the cover become high resistance, leading to corrupted data and that pop up message, or they break completely stopping it working. This text is now being typed on my iPad Pro keyboard proving that it is possible to fix it! It is a great keyboard when it is working. So much better than those really cheap Bluetooth ones on eBay.It is a half hour video showing why and where it has failed, a temporary fix, a better fix for the tracks in the cover, fixing the connection pins and fixing breaks between the 3 pins and the tracks. It doesn't take too long to do but needs a bit of perseverance, a soldering iron, a knife and some copper tape. See buying links below for these. How to Fix a Turbo - Cheaply and quickly - Turbo Core Replacement comeinhandynow 2020-04-06 | Rather than a new turbo why not just change the core of the turbo. In this example it only cost £40 and was relatively quick. As shown in the video. This turbo was a Garrett GT2052LS as used on the 1.8T engine in Rover and MG cars (rover 75, MG ZT) and probably others as well like the MG6 1.8T. Similar GT2052 turbos are also used on the Vauxhall / Opel Signum 2.0 Turbo, Vauxhall / Opel Vectra 2.0 Turbo, Saab 9-3 & 9-5 2.0T.I picked up the new turbo core for £40 from ebay UK, however the prices seem to vary a lot. Currently seem to be about £70, could be the current Coronavirus effect on the market! So shop around. A simple Turbo Boost Controller - on a Freelander TD4 - quicker pickup, less smoke. comeinhandynow 2020-02-24 | As part of an investigation into removing the smoke at 2500 rpm on a diesel Friedlander TD4 I eventually built this circuit to enable a bit more air to be pushed into the engine. I had gone over everything else on the engine fixing and cleaning of the faults. In the end I came to the conclusion that a small amount of smoke at idle at 2500 rpm was due to the fact that the engine was quite old and a bit carbonised up and therefore the airflow into the engine was reduced. By controlling the turbo boost with this circuit I was able to get a bit more air into the engine and doing that completely eliminated the final bit of smoke. This is just part of my long journey improving my Freelander TD4 and reducing smoke. I’m not saying you should definitely do this, it’s really up to you, this is just what I did on my car.This circuit is quite simple, also very cheap. It gives quite a coarse control and has a few different modes to select, but basically gives more boost pressure but has a sharp safety cut out of the boost pressure at a preset level that you decide. Converting a Flat Roof To a Pitched Roof - How I did mine comeinhandynow 2020-02-18 | This shows how my flat asphalt roof was dug up and converted to a tiled pitched (sloping) roof. It was all done by me and a carpenter friend who did the frame and was approved by UK building regulation control and was successfully signed off by them. If you as a DIYer are thinking of saving money and doing it yourself then this should help show the rough methods and stages involved. I have tried not to be too detailed in order to limit the video to 30 minutes. There should be enough shown here to illustrate the stages and construction method. When you’ve done it once you realise it is not too difficult but it is a fair bit of work.It is not intended for good builders who probably know most of this stuff already, but more for the DIYer. Having said that many so called builders build some shocking roofs with many faults being water leaks, poor structural support and no resistance to roof spread/ collapsing! How to Remove, Strip and Rebuild: Turbo Boost Control Solenoid. Freelander TD4 comeinhandynow 2019-11-29 | As part of an investigation into a smokey diesel Freelander TD4 this video now looks at the turbo control solenoid. Testing, removing and stripping it down to check for problems. This is the M47 BMW Diesel engine as also used on a lot of BMWs like the 320d etc.A common problem is smoke at idle at 2500 rpm. Smoke? - How to pressure test Turbo hoses & Intercooler comeinhandynow 2019-08-22 | As part of a series going over this BMW Diesel engine in a Freelander 1 TD4 in order to reduce its smoke, this was a test I did for checking for turbo air leaks. If the engine isn’t getting enough turbo boost and hence not enough air then the fuel to air ratio will go up, increasing smoke and power will also go down.
